Powell River - Canada

29 Aug: Arrived in Powell River back on the mainland opposite Comox via ferry. The major economic activity in the district is a large Pulp and Paper mill originally established in 1910 by Brooks Scanlon Lumber Co. The mill dominates the approach to the town and district of some 30,000 persons.
Travelling north the end of the narrow, mostly gravel, road (Highway 101) is at Lund 28 km where a tidy historic hotel is located and various tour operators provide diving and boating trips but be prepared to pay for limited parking. Then to a delightful, Herondell B&B of Nancy & Alex Hollman, located on Highway 101, just south of Lang Bay, below Powell River. Well secluded on a private woodland.
30 Aug. A day in Powell River. The locals are active in promoting the upgrading of the original houses in the “Town Site” including other heritage buildings which present a very tidy and kempt appearance. The houses and buildings have been well constructed and were for many years owned by the company and well maintained during that time.  Went bush and did a 13km walk around "Inland Lake" (thought all lakes were inland).  It is a local recreation area with lots cyclists riding the trails.  The other "locals" were frequent Garter snakes, said to be harmless and rather photogenic.

Next time to Whistler and cattle country.
